  2. Bio • Born in Reidsville, North Carolina • Attended: • University of North Carolina School of the Arts • The Maryland Institute College of Art (BFA) • Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture • Now lives and works in Brooklyn, New York

  3. The Start • Started making art during middle school in the late 1970’s • In 7th grade he was drawing, painting, and knotting macramé. • This is what led to him to receive a scholarship to the School of the Arts • In 1983 (senior year) received 4 NCSA Gold Key awards in the Scholastic Arts Awards Competition. • He believes that this is what started his art career.

  4. Style • Describes his sculptures as “psychic architecture.” • Michele Yun (curator at the Museum of Modern Art) describes his work as: • “Hints of the supernatural and the alien.” • “Ghostly assemblages that could be viewed as organic and architectural.” • “Southern Gothic literary tradition” • Audience should get a “haunted, grotesque, and everyday supernatural” feel.

  5. Materials • Abstract creations usually made out of: • Paper maché • Clay • Sea shells • Glitter • Carborundum grits

  6. Sculptures and Paintings • Uses sculptures as a basis of his drawings and paintings • Takes a photograph of one of his sculptures and will create a drawing by projection the picture on a canvas. • Then applies mixed media • Close up the paintings look abstract, but from far away they look like a photo.
