Alternative Targets for Carbon Dioxide Stabilization • Nicholas Stern is calling for a target stabilization level of 400-450ppm CO2. • David King (ex-UK Government chief scientists) says anything above 400ppm CO2 carries an unacceptable risk. • Even at 400ppm CO2 it is virtually certain that there will be more than 2 degrees C of warming. This is a critical point that is still not appreciated by most people. • James Hansen (head of the NASA Goddard Institute) is now saying that we must aim for 350ppm CO2 or risk catastrophe. His research indicates that above a particular threshold CO2 concentration the world will completely deglaciate. This threshold appears to be around 425ppm CO2 with a margin for error of +- 75ppm.
