NOAA Metadata Manager and Repository Joseph Shirley John Relph Karen E. Horan
The Challenge Supporting metadata formats can be a challenge. The basic FGDC format contains over 300 fields. There are various FGDC profiles, including Biological, Shoreline and Remote Sensing, which add even more fields. We need a tool that supports creation, editing, storage and public search.
Overview NOAA Metadata Manager and Repository (NMMR) • Developed by NGDC and NODC • Supports multiple metadata standards • Web, SOAP, and search interfaces • Creation of metadata, with minimal understanding of FGDC standards • Supports workflow with multiple states • Collection/granule (parent/child) record sets

Process • Create metadata template • Create records • Create • Validate • Approve • Publish
Metadata Templates • Metadata types are defined by creation of templates that specify elements • Data types and valid values • Required or optional • Repeatable • Record structure • Component records for common elements • Currently support basic FGDC, plus Biological profile and Remote Sensing extensions • Expect to support ISO 19115/19139

Record Creation • Import existing record in XML format • Create from scratch • Create from default record template • Create with customized interface

Publish • Records available via public search • Uses Z39.50 protocol • Wide international support • FGDC/NSDI Clearinghouse Nodes • Field-based search (Title, Keyword, Time) • Z39.50 client or Web Portal
In Conclusion • Used since 2002 by NGDC, NODC, CoRIS • Ongoing development • Greatest thing since sliced bread
