Improving Data Access to NOAA Platform Location Metadata Matt Austin, NOAA 2011 EDM Conference
Observing System Platforms • Observing Systems are composed of one or more platforms/stations • Platforms can be point features • A buoy is a example of a platform • Platforms measure one or more observation parameter • Ex: surface winds, water temperature, wave height
Barriers to data access: Obtaining location metadata for observing system platforms • Spatial location of observing system platforms and data use metadata not always available online • Spatial data location=Latitude, Longitude • Data Use metadata= Attributes linked to the spatial location that allows analysis such filtering and searching • Not always updated frequently • Not always complete • Not always in a standard format • Information is sometimes developed for use as a single system rather then as a part of a set of systems • data use metadata attributes do not always follow naming convention standards
