Supplies for Language Arts • one 1 1/2” three ring soft (bendable) binder with dividers • One Composition notebook • ( NO SPIRAL NOTEBOOKS) • two pocket folder with clasps • flash-drive • 2 packs of loose-leaf paper • pens (blue/black and red for editing) • Pencils • Markers • highlighters • colored pencils • flash-drive • book for silent reading • two pocket folder with clasps • glue sticks • box of tissues • hand sanitizer
Textbooks • Language of Literature • Springboard • Grammar and Writing • Novels • Nothing but the Truth • The Diary of Anne Frank • The Giver • The Outsiders
Springboard • College readiness • Pre-AP curriculum • Aligns with the new Common Core Standards • Prepares students for PARCC test
Journals • Gives students practice responding to an unknown prompt. Must be a well-written paragraph. • Journals must be made up if they are absent. • Journals will be collected at least twice a quarter.
Working Portfolio • Keep notes on literature, grammar, writing and vocabulary in BINDER with DIVIDERS. • Includes vocabulary, questions, graphic organizers, and notes on stories from literature book. • Have all the information they need to study for the test.
Writing • Writing is the major focus of this class. • Students will be writing every week. • All writing will be kept in a writing portfolio.
Grading Scale Projects 20% Tests/Assessments 40% Classwork/homework 35% Class Participation 5%
FCAT Writing Test • February 25, 2014 • 60 minute test • Given an expository or persuasive prompt • Graded on scale of 1 – 6 • Must score a 4 to be considered proficient
Empower Your Child • Allow your child to be their own advocate. • They should ask if they have a question about an assignment or a grade. • Give them a chance to be responsible for themselves.
