  2. Bell Ringer- 10/2/12 During the Age of Exploration, European countries sent explorers to Asia and North America. Many historians say they were motivated by God, gold, and glory. In 2-3 complete sentences, what do you think this means?

A Sea Route to Asia • 1488- Portuguese navigator Bartholomeu Dias went around the Cape of Good Hope around Africa • 1497- Portuguese navigator Vasco de Gama- went around the Cape of Good Hope and continued to land in India • Portugal became the first European country to find a sea route to Asia

  4. Results of Early Exploration • Start of the Atlantic slave trade • Portugal gained wealth and power • Other European nations wanted to find their own sea route to Asia

Christopher Columbus From Italy Convinced King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella from Spain to finance his journey westward to find a sea route to Asia Aug. 1492- His ships set sail- the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria Oct. 12, 1492- His ships landed in the Bahamas thinking they had landed in Asia (the Indies)

Imagine that you are one of the Native Americans who was living in North America when Columbus arrived. You later learn that he has gotten credit for the “discovery” of your home.
