English Language Prefixeshttp://www.southampton.liunet.edu/academic/pau/course/webpre.htm#CO Prefixes and suffixes were originally words themselves but they are now groups of letters added to words or to roots to create new words. Prefixes [pre (before) + fix (fasten) = fasten before] are groups of letters placed before words or roots. Prefixes modify the meanings of words and roots.
How Words Work interrupt (verb): to stop, to break in (usually with questions) inter (prefix = to throw something between other things) rupt (root = to break or burst) It's impolite to interrupt someone while they are speaking.
How Words Work Nonfiction (adjective) not made up, factual or true. non (prefix = not) fict (root = shape, make, fashion) ion (suffix = condition or action) Yoko is reading anonfiction book.
