Deaf and Hard of Hearing deaf - anyone who is unable to hear Deaf- individuals who, in addition to not hearing, are members of the Deaf community, subscribing to the unique cultural norms, values, and traditions of that group. Members of this group use American Sign Language (ASL) as their 1st language Hard of hearing- an individual with a hearing loss (ranging from mild to severe) who speaks and may not use sign language
Mental Illness Impaired psychosocial or cognitive functioning due to disturbances in any one or more of the following processes: biological, chemical, physiological, genetic, psychological, or social. Mental disorders are extremely variable in duration, severity, and prognosis, depending on the specific type of affliction
Respectful Language OLD- THE DISABLED NEW- PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES-One is a person before one is disabled, people with disabilities are individuals who share a common condition. OLD- THE HANDICAPPED NEW- PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES – Using person first language is more appropriate
Respectful Language OLD- WHEELCHAIR BOUND; CONFINED TO A WHEELCHAIR NEW- USES A WHEELCHAIR OR WHEELCHAIR USER- Wheelchairs provide increased freedom and access OLD- CRIPPLED NEW- HAS A DISABILITY
Respectful Language OLD- RETARDED; FEEBLE-MINDED NEW-PEOPLE WITH COGNITIVE OR DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITY OLD- MENTAL, CRAZY, PSYCHO, INSANE, NUTCASE-These are offensive, sensitive and have negative stereotypes NEW- PERSON LABELED MENTALLY ILL
Respectful Language OLD- NORMAL-Implies that people with disabilities are not normal NEW- PERSON WITHOUT A DISABILITY OLD- DEAF AND DUMB, DEAF-MUTE-Simply because someone is deaf does not mean they cannot speak NEW- DEAF PEOPLE OR DEAF INDIVIDUALS
Respectful Language OLD- HEARING IMPAIRED-Medical term implies that something needs to be fixed NEW- HARD OF HEARING OLD- AFFLICTED, SUFFERS FROM-Implies pain and suffering NEW- LIVES WITH A DISABILITY
