Our Official Statement on Sustainability: “Moraine Valley Community College will carry out actions in all operations, academics, and in our community that meet current needs, while taking care to protect and enhance the social, environmental and economic resources needed by future generations to enjoy a quality of life equal to or greater than the present.”

Sustainability Coordinator of Teaching and Learning • Faculty member – Associate Professor of Biology • Reports to the Dean of the appropriate subdivision (Dean of Science, Business & Computer Technology) • Compensation – 3 hours of release time per semester
Main Goal • Gradual building of sustainability into the academic community at Moraine Valley by infusing sustainability into the curriculum across the disciplines
A Professional Development Journey • Define the true meaning of sustainability • Research and discuss the connections between sustainability and their discipline • Accumulate resources to use in the classroom • Create assignments and assessment to bring into the classroom
The GYC (Greening Your Curriculum) • 1.5 years of dedication • 4 lengthy workshops • E-packet • Updating of course descriptions • Offer sustainability workshops • Serve as mentors • Over 65 faculty participation over 4 years
GYC Program • 6-week Online MVLA (Moraine Valley Learning Community) course • 6-week online GYC 102A – Green Economy & Social Justice • 6-week online GYC 102B – Eco-Literacy & Local Connections • 20-hour face-2-face Prairie Project • Various other 1-4 CTL (Center for Teaching & Learning) hour workshops – online & face-2-face
Faculty Compensation • Faculty that participate will receive 1 PGU (1 Professional Growth Unit = to 1 graduate credit for lane movement/raise) • Stipend of $500 when E-Packet is complete • Create an original sustainability definition for syllabi • Short description of each sustainability-infused course • Detailed listing of how sustainability is infused into each course (to mentor future GYC faculty in the discipline)
GYC Graduates (Fellows) • Continue to infuse sustainability into other courses • Co-facilitate a section of Prairie Project • Facilitate CTL and MVLA GYC workshops • Host on campus presentations for the entire community • Create workshops to teach faculty within their discipline how to infuse sustainability • Mentor others in their department in the infusion of sustainability across their discipline
Students on Sustainability Track • Self-select into sustainability-infused courses • Determine academic interest in a course section • Descriptions written by GYC faculty • Shared thru Center for Sustainability & Academic Programs webpages
SUS 101 • Sustainability 101 will be mandatory • Taught by a GYC graduate • Cross disciplinary • Housed in Sustainability Department • Course in the works
Students Earn • Notation of each sustainability-infused course on their transcript • Related (25%) • Focused (lens of course) • Status as a Sustainability Scholar after taking a prescribed amount of infused courses • Printed on transcripts
Most Importantly, Students Earn • Well-rounded knowledge of sustainability across the disciplines • Desired skill set • Applicable knowledge and practice for future careers

Gen Ed Learning Outcome Students will: Recognize one’s legal, ethical, social, and sustainable responsibilities
But how? Students will: 1.) Identify the ecological processes and how choices affect the environment 2.) Demonstrate awareness of social justice and equity issues and their impact on the global population 3.) Distinguish ethically responsible business practices.
