  4. What’s Statistics? • Science of learning from data – numbers with context. • Science of collecting , organizing, analyzing, and drawing conclusions. • Used to make sense out of data.

  11. Routine • Begin working on Do Now as soon as you enter the classroom. • Take out homework. • Write down the Focus Question for the day in your Binder.

  15. Tests and Quizzes • Tests after each unit. • Mid unit quizzes • Make-ups will take place during Period 0 or after school if you’re lucky. • You have ONE week to make-up quizzes. • Only excused absences!

  16. Lateness/Absent • Must have a pass. • If you are absent, you are still required to turn in assignments. • If you are absent on a quiz or test day, you must bring me a note.

  17. Bathroom Pass • You cannot go the first and last 10 minutes of class. • You have 3 minutes. No more than 5 minutes. • You must ask permission in order to leave. • Leave quietly. • Resume working when you return.

  18. Plagiarism • Copying. • “Working together” doesn’t result in identical papers. • If two people think that four times five is nine, then we have a problem. • Don’t. • This is the big one. You’ll really, really regret it.

  19. Common courtesy • Act in a respectful mature manner. • If you drop something  pick it up. • If you have garbage  throw it out at the end of class. • When you enter the classroom and the door is closed  close it behind you. • If I call on someone specific do not shout out your response.

  20. Now, to grading policies. • We’ll be using www.jupitergrades.com again this year.

  21. Grading • Quizzes/Tests 55 % • Homework 20 % • Projects/Class Activities 15% • Participation 10 % • Do Now, Exit, Attendance

  23. Statistics is the Science of Learning from Data….. • The number 10.5 has no meaning by itself • but if I tell you it represents a newborn’s weight… • Data from polls, t.v. ratings, gas prices, medical study outcomes, etc. • Data is represented as numbers in context.

Who talks more…women or men? • The author of The Female Brain said that women say 3 times as many words per day as men. • Researchers found that “Men showed a slightly wider variability in words uttered…But, in the end, the sexes came out just about even in the daily averages: women at 16,215 words and men at 15,669 when 396 students were tested.

  25. The most important information about any statistical study is how the data were produced.

  26. How many times have you cheated during a test at school in the past year? • They asked 30,000 students from 100 randomly selected schools. • 64% had cheated at least once • Would we get exactly 64% if we asked this at International?

  27. Why Study Statistics? • To be an informed consumer • To make decisions • To test the qualities of products • To evaluate decisions that affect your life – insurance, financial aid, medical resources.

  28. My cousin had a heart condition. She went to a hospital in her hometown that was ranked as one of the top ten in the nation for cardiac care. They turned her down because she was considered “too high risk.”Why?
