Through this web quest you will get the opportunity to discover more about the Surrealist movement, how to critique an artwork, as well as see what it feels like to prepare for a gallery opening.   2. Introduction You and a friend just got hired as interns at the most prominent art gallery in Chicago. Your boss has just informed both of you that your first job is to research 4 surrealist artists and to get each of their art works into his gallery for an opening revolving around the Surrealist Movement. But that is not all! Your boss wants you to include a brief critique. You have 10 days to complete this project. Good luck!   3. Task You and your partner are to gather as much information as possible regarding the Surrealist artist you have found as well as his/her art work. In order to assist you in writing a proper critique of the work, you will be responsible for answering the questions in the ‘process’ section in paragraph form. Process • Print out the elements of art and principles of design sheet to assist in your critique. • Print out the question sheet and record your answers as you visit your assigned sites. • Print out the art work as you write about it. • Assign roles between you and your partner. Example: • Who is responsible for looking up each artist? • What questions will you answer? • Who is responsible for printing examples of work, etc. • Both members of the team will visit the sites listed in the resource section.   5. Process Continued… The elements of art and principles of design will assist you in critiquing the art works that you look at. Please get to know these, they are the building blocks of what makes art, Art! C R I T I Q U E Process Continued…~ Description ~ • What is the artist’s name, title of work, date created, medium, and dimensions. • Look for the elements of art and list them. • Describe the subject matter.   7. C R I T I Q U E Process Continued…~ Analysis ~ 4. Consider the most significant principles of art that were used in the artwork. Describe how the artist used them to organize the elements. C R I T I Q U E Process Continued…~ Interpretation ~ • Considering what you have learned thus far regarding the artwork, what do you think the artist was trying to say? • What do you think it means? • What feelings do you have when looking at this work? • Do you think there are things in this artwork that represent other things – symbols? • Does the work remind you of other things you have experienced (i.e., analogy or metaphor)? • Describe the expressive qualities you find in the work.   12. Conclusion Congratulations! You finished just in time for the biggest gallery opening of the decade! You have done some research, learned how to describe, analyze, interpret, and evaluate art in order to develop a successful critique. Along the way you have been exposed to new and different artists, their works, and the stories behind both. Perhaps one day you may work in a gallery of your own. Keep up the good work!
