PROGRAM INITIATIVES 2009 New programs commenced in 2008, strengthening in 2009 – one year in length – offered on both Mt Gravatt and Gold Coast campuses 1. Graduate Diploma of Education – Primary Years P to 7 2. Graduate Diploma of Education - Middle Years Years 4 to 9 3. Graduate Diploma of Education – Secondary Years 6 to 12
Graduate Diploma of Education - Primary Years P to 7 • Designed for graduates from a non-education background wishing to teach from Prep to Year 7. • It covers the theory and practice of teaching, concentrating on the characteristics of learners and teachers in primary schooling environments, and the social and educational contexts of education. • The program includes education studies, curriculum studies and professional experience in Primary school settings.
Entry Requirements: • Completed Bachelors degree of sufficient breadth to allow the applicant to teach across the eight key learning areas expected by employers: The Arts. English, Health and Physical Education, Mathematics, Science, Study of Society and Environment and Technology. • The detail of these key learning areas are on Queensland Curriculum Studies Authority website http://www.qsa.qld.edu.au/qsa/
Graduate Diploma of Education - Middle Years Years 4 to 9 • Is designed for graduates from a non-education background wishing to teach these year levels. • It covers the theory and practice of teaching, concentrating on the characteristics of learners and teachers in middle schooling environments, and the social and educational contexts of education. • The program includes education studies, curriculum studies in nominated teaching areas, and professional experience in Year 4 to 9 school settings. • Students will need to check which of the teaching areas are offered at the campus of their choice.
Entry requirements: Middle Years • Completed Bachelors degree (or equivalent) of sufficient breadth to allow the applicant to teach across the eight key learning areas expected by employers with • An emphasis on specialising in up to two of the listed teaching areas. • These key learning areas include: The Arts. Graduate Diploma of Education – Secondary Years 6 to 12 • Is designed for graduates from a non-education background wishing to teach these year levels - generally referred to as secondary school teachers. • It covers the theory and practice of teaching, concentrating on the characteristics of learners and teachers in middle (Years 6 to 9 in secondary schools)and senior (Years 10-12) secondary schooling environments, and the social and educational contexts of education. • The program includes education studies, curriculum studies in nominated teaching areas, and professional experience in Year 6 to 9 (middle years) and senior secondary school settings (Years10-12).
Entry requirements - Secondary Applicants: • Required to select from the following teaching areas in the middle and senior school: Biology, Chemistry, Computer Education, Drama, English, Health and Physical Education, Mathematics, Integrated Sciences, Physics, Social Sciences (History or Geography), Film & Media (senior only); Visual Art, Business Education, Instrumental Music, Music, Legal Studies (senior only), and LOTE . • Should check at the time of application the teaching areas available at the specific campus of study. • Need a completed Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) with disciplinary strengths in distinctive teaching areas. In the secondary program a disciplinary strength is identified at the equivalent of 60CP (or six full courses) of content in a particular discipline. • See the Queensland Curriculum Studies Authority website
Linking Grad Dip Ed - Secondary with Undergraduate Degrees For the first time in 2008 students were able to select through QTAC a pathway from an undergraduate degree into the Grad Dip Education - Secondary. This option is available for a limited number of degrees and will continue to have a separate entry in the 2009 QTAC guide.
