Widening Participation Agenda – 1 year on • Higher Education Forum – a QLD collaborative approach • Proposed changes to QTAC Special Consideration of Disadvantage Student Services - Student Equity Services
Griffith’s response Enhanced outreach • Expanded and enhanced Uni-Reach Program • Launch into Life at Logan • Customised activities for Indigenous students, Pacific Islander students, students with disabilities • Development of resources including resources for parents/care givers • Other (equity) partnership initiatives Student Services – Student Equity Services
Griffith’s response Developing pathways • QTAC Application Fee Support Scheme extended to more Griffith Connect schools • Uni-Start Equity Admission and Scholarships Scheme Increased support • Uni-Key Program extended throughout first year • Uni-Skills for continuing students • Widening Participation Scholarships in addition to Chancellor’s Equity Scholarships • Education Costs Bursaries and Laptop Scheme • Counselling support (Logan campus) • Additional Indigenous student support (GUMURRII SSU) Student Services – Student Equity Services
Recent QTAC developments • QTAC has been undertaking consultations as part of a review of Special Consideration of Disadvantage • Initially were trying to identify ways in which QTAC could assist institutions with the identification of low socio-economic status applicants • Identified it would be preferable to reform the Special Consideration of Disadvantage (SCD) scheme • QTAC Board will be considering proposals on 6 May • If approved an new Educational Access Scheme will be implemented this year for admissions in 2012 Student Services – Student Equity Services
QTAC Update (continued) • The Scheme will be based on an increased number of categories of disadvantages - 8 categories are being proposed including: • financial hardship • disrupted schooling • refugee status • natural disasters • Applicants can identify more than one type of disadvantage • Applicants will need to demonstrate that they have experienced educational disadvantage as a result of their circumstances • Applicants will need to have an Educational Support Statement completed if they have been enrolled in study at any stage in the previous 3 years Student Services – Student Equity Services
