3.  Your task • Read about the different methods used by abolitionists to abolish slavery. Make a list of them in your notes. • Decide which were the most effective and rank them • Write a judgement paragraph explaining which you think would have been most successful? Extension. What steps did he take to end slavery? • When was slavery finally abolished? • Make a list of winners & losers from the slave trade • Extension. Write a judgement on who won or lost overall with the abolition of slavery

9.  Homework You are going to take part in a debate about the abolition of slavery. You will be given role cards indicating whether you think the trade should be abolished or continued. You will have to suspend your natural, modern opinions and put yourselves into the shoes of actual C19th people! A speaker will decide who should speak and which side made the most effective points. Consider the following: What position your character would have on the debate Why your character would want slavery to be abolished or continue Ways of undermining your opponents arguments Examples from your knowledge that support your views Rhetorical language that will make your point effectively

10.  Extension • Conduct some research into the life of Wilberforce. Find out why he became such an avid campaigner against slavery and what his connection with Sandgate was?

11.  Your task • Imagine you have been asked by the abolitionists to give a speech in Parliament to support the banning of the slave trade. Write a speech, (1 side A4 minimum) including some or all of the following points • Explain what happens during each stage of the Triangular Trade • Tell us about living conditions on slave ships and on plantations • Point out the methods of campaigning used by abolitionists like OlaudahEquiano & William Wilberforce • Sum up why the slave trade must finish •  Finish with a powerful and memorable concluding statement (e.g. like the quote from Wedgwood’s plaque)
