Using Telemetry Data in Maintenance • Four types of telemetry data that apply to maintenance operations: • Location • Usage • Parameter Measures • Diagnostic Trouble Codes
Location Data • Locate units last know location • Direct field services to breakdown site • In case of accident, direct emergency personnel to site • Use by field service crews to locate remotely positioned vehicles • Assign vehicles to nearest shop • Update vehicle’s assigned maintenance location for service scheduling • Most commonly used in trucking industry
Meter/Usage Data • Distance • GPS-Based • Engine Computer Based • Engine Hours • Engine Computer • Engine On – Off • Fuel Consumption • Amount consumed • Fuel Percentage in Tank • Idle Time
Maintenance Scheduling • Most maintenance schedules driven by usage and/or time • Frequent usage updates improve reliability of data for forecasting service • Fuel consumption can also be used to supplement meter usage • Idle can be used to vehicles that may require alternative schedule criteria • Frequent usage updates also useful in justify vehicle need
Vehicle Parameters • Vehicle Parameter Measures • Oil Pressure • Engine Temperature • Battery Capacity • Alternator Output • Fluid Levels • RPM • Speed • Tire Pressure • Seeking extreme outliers
Condition Based Maintenance • Use actual condition of the vehicle and real-time monitoring of systems to drive maintenance needs • Vehicle specific service plans • Extend service intervals until actually needed • Real-time monitoring can spot breakdowns before they happen • Objective is to establish thresholds for normal use • Seek extreme outliers by evaluating measures against thresholds
Diagnostic Trouble Codes • Vehicles own health monitoring • DTCs: • Fault Code • Occurrence • Status • Automatically alert maintenance planners to potential issues • Faults trigger work requests • Schedule vehicle for service
