Lesson Plans • Important to remember: • Kids need many changes of state • Attention spans = very short • Focus on fun and interaction • Make teacher-centered talking a very short part of class • Kids need routine to feel safe. How can you provide a consistent structure for most of your lessons?

  5. Your challenge . . . • Is to create a 50-minute Young Learner lesson plan with your partner(s) • Figure out a way to represent your plan on poster paper with symbols or drawings • You’ll share your plan with us

  6. Punishment / Behavior modification

  7. When a student breaks a rule, always ask: • “Which rule did you break?” • “Why is it important to follow this rule?” • Bad Behavior Prevention: Randomly “catch” students obeying rules; praise them in front of the class and explain which rule they were following

  14. 1. Stay positive! • Don’t be this guy!

  15. 2. Build relationships with your students!

  16. 3. Don’t think too much about rewards and punishments. • Think about motivating and engaging.

  17. 4. Nurture the heart, not just the mind!

  18. 5. Be a collector of stuff!

  19. For JHS Teachers: • The “stuff” includes authentic materials from the US! • Menus (In-N-Out! Veggie Grill) • Catalogues (Urban Outfitters! Hollister!) • Grocery Stores Circulars • Postcards • Magazines for teenagers

  20. 6. Is it cute or does it count?

  21. 7. Invest in materials that you can re-use again and again!

  22. 8. “Steal” from other teachers!

  23. 9. Join TESOL! Be active in it! • Poster presentations!

  24. 10. Never stop evaluating yourself, but know when to praise yourself, too!

  25. 11. Take care of yourself! You’re not just a teacher, you’re you!
