Agenda • Lesson Plans: How do we put everything together? • Duo/Trio lesson plan • Classroom Management • Dealing with misbehavior 3) Candy award ceremony and final thoughts
Lesson Plans • Important to remember: • Kids need many changes of state • Attention spans = very short • Focus on fun and interaction • Make teacher-centered talking a very short part of class • Kids need routine to feel safe. How can you provide a consistent structure for most of your lessons?
Your challenge . . . • Is to create a 50-minute Young Learner lesson plan with your partner(s) • Figure out a way to represent your plan on poster paper with symbols or drawings • You’ll share your plan with us
When a student breaks a rule, always ask: • “Which rule did you break?” • “Why is it important to follow this rule?” • Bad Behavior Prevention: Randomly “catch” students obeying rules; praise them in front of the class and explain which rule they were following
Think, Pair, Share: • What will be your approach to reward and punishment in your future classroom? • Did you pick up some tips that you’d like to remember for the future?
What are the main reasons why students misbehave in a classroom? • not being able to do the work, • fear of failure, • boredom, • lack of clarity about what to do, • too long spent on an activity without a break, • lack of self-esteem and • poor relationships." Newell and Jeffery (2002) "Behavior Management in the Classroom"
1. Stay positive! • Don’t be this guy!
3. Don’t think too much about rewards and punishments. • Think about motivating and engaging.
For JHS Teachers: • The “stuff” includes authentic materials from the US! • Menus (In-N-Out! Veggie Grill) • Catalogues (Urban Outfitters! Hollister!) • Grocery Stores Circulars • Postcards • Magazines for teenagers
9. Join TESOL! Be active in it! • Poster presentations!
10. Never stop evaluating yourself, but know when to praise yourself, too!
11. Take care of yourself! You’re not just a teacher, you’re you!
