  1. Global Livingston Institute Creating Innovative Solutions to Poverty Listen. Think. Act. “Flower” When looking through the drawings done by the children the one thing that stood out was the way they drew flowers. The stem, leaf, and root of this mark are copied directly from one of the drawings and represents the way each child drew these parts of the flower. The petals of the flower make the African symbol for wisdom and creativity. The flower is also representative of growth.   2. Mission Think. Listen. Act. Through immersive travel, the Global Livingston Institute brings students and community leaders together to experience East Africa to incubate innovative solutions to poverty by thinking, listening and then, acting…when necessary.

Vision • Each year, through research and immersion experiences, the GLI focuses on providing opportunities to experience East Africa via the lens of the people who live and work in Uganda and Rwanda. • The GLI is building strategic and innovative partnerships in four communities in the region: • Kampala, Uganda • Lira, Uganda (Jungle Clinic) • Lake Bunyoni, Uganda (Entusi Retreat Center) • Musanze (Sonrise School)

  5. About the Global Livingston Institute • GLI serves as an incubator of ideas involving change makers from the United States and East Africa focused on health, education & public management. Founded in 2009, the GLI will eventually be based in the Lake Bunyoni Region of Southern Uganda. • The institute serves as a research and learning center where students, visiting professors, community leaders and other professionals convene to conduct research, to exchange ideas and to work with other nongovernment organizations to facilitate more strategic and collaborative partnerships between the United States and East Africa.

GLI Entusi Retreat Center Modeled after the Bellagio Center developed by the Rockefeller Foundation, the concept is to provide a creative and innovative working space for students and community leaders from all around the world to convene to address complex social issues. Entusi is designed to serve as an incubator for learning where students, community leaders and local partners will work together to reinvest in the Lake Bunyonyi community through education, health, public management and arts and culture.

Looking Ahead to 2014 and Beyond • Further develop Interactive Course Curriculum between the GLI and the University of Colorado School of Public Affairs. • Engage 45 students and community leaders annually in research opportunities and immersion experiences in East Africa. • Conduct three medical outreach sessions in Kampala’s Katanga Slums serving 600 women and children. • Place five GLI interns in Uganda and Rwanda to engage in research development for the Global Institute. • Deliver 50 bags of supplies for use at Come Let’s Dance and other core project sites.   12. Looking Ahead to 2014 and Beyond Continued…. • Publish a research paper from data collected in Katanga Slums. (In partnership with University of Colorado School of Public Affairs.) • Develop plans for a 12-bed medical ward for Sister Jovita’s Jungle Clinic in Lira. • Conduct needs assessment of nonprofit community in Kabale Region of Southern Uganda. • Develop new ways to utilize the Entusi Retreat Center. Facilitate 6 retreats. • STEM classroom partnerships • Develop three-year strategic plan and sustainable budget. • Establish 501c3 nonprofit status.
