Causes of the War • 1. 1808-1811 British impressed over 6,000 American soldiers • 2. Chesapeake Leopard Affair • British captain fired on the USS Chesapeak • 3 dead, 18 wounded • British officials said it was an accident • Jefferson responds • Forbade British ships to dock in American ports • Ordered state governments to call on militiamen
Causes of the War • 3. Embargo act • American policy (to avoid war) that prohibited exports to foreign countries • Disastrous for the economy • 4. British and Native American Relations • British gave military aid to Native Americans on the Northwest frontier • They wanted to rebuild relationships
Madison • James Madison is elected president • War of 1812 called “Mr. Madison’s War
Battle of Tippecanoe • Tecumseh unites Indian tribes against Americans • Leads to an attack by Americans on Tecumseh’s tribe • Americans win the battle and William Henry Harrison becomes a national hero
War Hawks • John C. Calhoun and Henry Clay • Those that are calling for war • War Hawks hate the British
Important Events • The US declares war in June 1812 • US made several unsuccessful invasions into Canada • Tecumseh is killed in the Battle of Thames • Star Spangled Banner is written • Battle of New Orleans makes Andrew Jackson a national hero
Treaty of Ghent • Signed in 1814 in Ghent, Belgium • No territory changed hands • Americans had proved themselves as a nation
