Download ManagerDemonstration Clarence E. Mingo II Franklin County Auditor August 2009
Overview • The download manager provides access to the most current & historical GIS data previously only available on CD / DVD. • The program organizes your downloads into a logical tree structure for easy access and archival. • You can select which drive to download files to, including network & removable (usb) drives. • Once installed, the program will create an icon in your start menu that you can use to run the program in the future. • The program has an auto-update mechanism built in. This way you are always running the latest edition of the software.
Internet Explorer Installation • From the main page, click ‘Start Download Manager’ button. • Internet Explorer will display a warning the file is not digitally signed. The program is created by our in house staff and is virus free. Click the install button to proceed. • If you are missing any pre-requisite software (usually Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0), the installation will inform you. You may need to consult with your computer administrator to get the necessary updates installed.
Firefox / Other Browser Installation • Firefox downloads setup.exe to your downloads folder • Run this setup.exe file to complete the Download Manager installation. You may see a similar warning about the file being unsigned. Press install or accept to continue.
Download Manager Application Updates • Occasionally, the program may need to be updated to fix problems or add new features • If an update is available, you will see this screen • Skipping the update may cause the program to not work correctly
Proxy Access • If you go through a proxy or firewall to get to the internet, you will be prompted for your proxy username and password. In most cases, this should be the same sign in you use to bring up Internet Explorer. • To prevent locking out accounts, the program will not remember your username and password, so you will need to enter this information each time you run the program.
Current Data vs. Historical Data • By default, Current Data is shown. This is the most current data available and is the same data that is distributed on our current DVD. • Historical Data allows you to browse our archive of data by year and month. The program only lists the years and months that we have data for. • In the screenshots above, you can see that Shapefiles were first created in April of 2002 on a quarterly basis.
Drive Selection • By default downloads are saved to the C drive • A different drive letter can be selected • The program will create the directory structure of /frkdata/<file type>/<year>/<month>/filename • The program shows how much free space is available on the selected drive. This number is updated whenever a file completes downloading.
Directory Structure This graphic shows a typical tree structure of downloaded files. The files are grouped by type, year and month and finally by filename
