Warm Up – Ionic Compounds Success Criteria for Ionic Compounds sheet
Learning Goals • By the end of class, I will be able to: • Identify polyatomic ions • Write the formulas for polyatomic ions • Name polyatomic ionic compounds
Polyatomic Ions • a group of atoms, usually of different elements, that act as a single ion. • Most have a negative charge, except for ammonium • Most end in “ate” or “ite”
Writing Formulas for Polyatomic ions We use the same rules when placing a polyatomic ion into a formula. The only difference is that we keep the polyatomic ion in brackets unless we only need one polyatomic ion to make the compound – we do not change ANYTHING inside the brackets. Eg: Aluminum Hydroxide 3+ 1- Al OH Al(OH)3 Eg: Sodium and phosphate 1+ 3- Na PO4 Na3PO4
Naming Polyatomic Compounds The following are examples of names of polyatomic ions. Attempt to figure out the rules for naming compounds containing a polyatomic ion. The name for the compound between calcium and carbonate is “Calcium carbonate” The name for the compound between magnesium and hydroxide is “Magnesium hydroxide” The name for the compound between ammonium and nitrate is “Ammonium nitrate”
Naming Polyatomic Ionic Compounds Eg: LiHCO3 • Name the metal ion (or ammonium ion) first. • Li is Lithium • Name the polyatomic ion. • HCO3 is Hydrogen carbonate • 3. Do not change the ending of the polyatomic ion! • Lithium hydrogen carbonate
Practice • Worksheet • Textbook questions (in weekly outline)
