‘SCREAMing’ to prevent violence ‘Engaging bystanders in the prevention of violence’
‘Victims are Getting Younger’ ‘Rites of Passage’ ‘Girls and Woman are more at risk’ ‘What is Violence?’
We need to challenge the thinking? We need boys & men to challenge their abusive peers We need leadership.
Aims • Raise Awareness • Challenge Thinking • Open Dialogue • Inspire Leadership
‘The Playbook’ • Corridor – Dating Abuse • Hanging Around – Sexual Harassment • Text Messages – Controlling Behaviour • Photos from a phone – Sex Texting • Circle of Friends – Sexual Assault • Lyrics – Sexist Music Lyrics • Party – Alcohol & Consent • Words – Homophobic bullying
CfE : HWB 4 – 46a Boys Scenario – ‘Photos from a phone’ You’re home alone and you get a text message from a male friend. It contains an attachment with a sexually explicit photo of his ex-girlfriend. She’s posing nude and sexy like a porn model.
Train of thought Wow. This got my attention, that’s for sure. But wait. Does she Know he’s showing these around? I doubt it. How would she feel if she knew? Then again, she did pose for the picture. But can’t this be used against her in some way, now or in the future? What was my friend thinking? He could get into trouble for this. Should I say something to him? Come to think of it, if I forward this to anyone else I might in trouble. Do I have a responsibility to her to say something?? If I do, won’t my friend be mad at me? What should I do?
Personal Options • Delete the picture and stay out of it. • Tell my friend to stop. Try to convince him that it’s wrong, disrespectful and might even be against the law for him to be showing private pictures of his ex-girlfriend like this • Tell my friend’s ex that he’s been sharing sexually explicit pictures of her with his friends. • Identify another friend of ours who might agree with me and together figure out what to do. • Ask my parents, a teacher or another adult whose opinion i value for their advice on what to do. • Personal option.
Bystander Approaches work • Bystander approaches foster and encourage empathy • How do we stop men going on the defensive ‘Inviting not Indicting is the way to do this’ – treat them as bystanders. • Bystander intervention training puts an individual or group into a situation from a distance. Its creates a safe place within which a conversation can start.
