  4. Expository • Most familiar form is the (5 paragraph) essay • Composed of introduction, body, conclusion • Different approaches: • Definition • Compare/Contrast • Process • Cause/Effect

  5. Expository • When writing your essay, you must include supporting details called concrete details • Different types of details may be used for different approaches or topics, including: • Facts • Statistics • Examples/Incidents

  6. Concrete Details Concrete, factual evidence Commentary What you have to say about the facts For every concrete detail, you must have at least 2 commentary

  9. When Writing… • Ask yourself: • What does the audience want to know? • Is it relevant to my listeners? • If I were in the audience, and I didn't know anything about the topic, what would me interest the most? • What does the audience already know? • Will the audience care about my topic?

  10. Let’s Get Started! • Our prompt: Describe the impact or effect that music has on your life. • Brainstorm ways music impacts (this is identifying your main ideas) • Share ways with the class • Choose top three, then develop one

  11. In Preparation for our story… • Your Prompt: You are going to INFORM your audience about the cause and effect of gangs in a society. You will answer what they are (define), why they exist, and what their purpose is . • For your commentary, you will need to make sure you are correctly citing any sources you use. Remember, MLA format!!! (OWL Purdue for correct citation information) • This paper will be 250-400 words and is due FRIDAY, April 5.

  12. REMEMBER!! • We want to write words people can chew on… • Transition words • Imagery, figurative language • Eliminate passive voice (use action verbs) • Be tense conscientious • Thoroughly support what you have to say
