Cheah Hoe Leong Seow Jing Ye Park Seong Jin Chua Jie Han Irony of the advancement of science and tech
What? • What is science and technology? Science -The study of nature (things that revolve in around us) Technology - Application of science
What? • Perceived future - Life without hardships - Increased use of technology in life due to advancement in S&T - Mechanical Aid in daily life i.e robots - Many industrial jobs replaced by machines.
What? • What is the perception of the future in science fiction ? - Most of them are negative - Halo – Destruction of Human Race by technologically advanced alien race
What? • - Blade runner – Technology is no longer enslaved by humans • Ironically, technology itself is starting to enslave humans • Replicants in the movie are both mentally and physically superior to humans
Reason • Why would humans want to “advance” in terms of science and technology? -Free themselves of the restrictions nature once imposed on them -Be free to shape and influence their surroundings at their will -Improve people’s lives and make them happier
Reason • Why would it be ironic to say that innovations in science and technology an improvement in our daily life? -People become more reliant on science and technology as it improves -Enslaved by science and technology -Lose the original meaning of science and technology to help humans free themselves of the restrictions nature once posed on them
Reason • Why does science and technology not necessarily make people happier? -Not all science and technology will be used to improve people’s lives -May be used to manufacture weapons -Destroy lives
Assumptions • What are the assumptions people make when they say they had already “advanced” in science and technology? -People are able to achieve more things with the help of technology -People assume that advances in science and technology will make their lives better-off
Assumptions • What are the assumptions present when people say that they have control over technology? • They are assuming that technology will not be capable of its own intelligence • Big assumption that technology will always be below human’s intelligence
Implications • Blade Runner-serves as a warning • Bleak environment-sunlight never reaches • Resembles the abyss • We get complacent when it comes to the level of advancement
Implications • Humans get further and further from what we can call “humans” • Gets to a point where the line between man and machine becomes blurred • Loss of our culture, our heritage
Truth • Neither can Science nor Technology be controlled by humans totally • Technology will exceed the intelligence of human beings • Human are rely too muchon science and technology
Truth • Advancement in technology may not be always be for the pleasure of humans, it may be for other purposes (nuclear weapons)
Truth • As technology keeps improving and improving, it shows a possibility that it may encompass the whole world in its power one day • Research shows that by 2015, computers would exceed the intelligence of the mouse and by the near future (around 2030), they would exceed the intelligence of humans
