Introduction • Even though the Ancient Greeks lived thousands of years ago, their fascinating culture lives on today. Their ideas in history, philosophy, math, science, architecture and government still influence us today.
Acropolis • The center of their civilization was Athens. In Athens there was a place called the Acropolis, which means high city in Greece. The Acropolis still towers over the city of Athens.
Parthenon • At the Acropolis was built a great temple called the Parthenon. The Parthenon was built in the fifth century B.C. Unfortunately in 1687 there was an explosion and the Parthenon’s roof and walls collapsed.
Athena • The Parthenon was the temple of Athena, the patron goddess of Athens. People brought gifts to the goddess, but few could enter the temple. The statue of Athena was more than 30 feet high made of wood, gold and ivory by a sculptor named Phidias.
The Agora • In the 5th century B.C., the heart of Athens was called the Agora - the marketplace. • It was filled with government buildings, workshops for pottery making and other crafts, jugglers and dancers and open stalls where the men did the shopping.
The Marketplace • The Athenians were active traders, so there were goods from many parts of the world. The market probably looked a lot how it looks in Athens today. Were you surprised to read that men did the shopping?
Women • Well, in Ancient Greece, wives tended to stay home to look after the children, while men led more public lives.
Men • Wealthy Greek men would often spend their evenings at parties called symposia where they would drink wine and discuss their ideas about politics and philosophy.
Gods and Goddesses • The Ancient Greeks believed in many different gods and goddesses, also known as Immortals, each in charge of a different aspect of life or death. They thought of them as similar to humans, with feelings such as love, hate, or anger. Read on to learn about them…
