Why is it important? The collection of data on patients’ ethnicity helps the NHS ensure that it is providing equity of access, delivery and outcomes for all service users.
But…….. • Despite it being mandatory for almost ten years, we are still a long way from 100% completeness • In 2003/04 over 23% of FCEs on HES for East Midlands providers did not have a ‘useable’ ethnic group code

Perverse situation has arisen • Data is not being used because of poor quality • But, because it is not being used there seems to be no incentive to improve it
Staff training • Able to demonstrate appreciation of need to collect the data • Know how to collect the data • Able to deal with questions and concerns about the data
