DEMOCRACY AROUND THE WORLD Following the spread of democracy
JOURNAL • How many democratic countries can you identify, off the “top of your head”?
OBJECTIVES • Familiarize self with democratic and non-democratic nations across the world • Look for “trends” in democracy • Identify how global democracy has changed in the last decade, if at all
MAPPING DEMOCRACY • In groups of 5, you will “map democracy” around the globe • Each member is responsible for ONE region • Use the country list provided by Ms. S. and ADD A KEY to your map! • Rank nations as “Free” “Partly Free” “Not Free”
NEXT STEPS… • When all group members have finished, cut out your maps and reorganize them to make a “World Map” (Proportions aren’t perfect… so do as best as you can!) • Answer questions (provided by Ms. S.) about your maps
Notice any changes?? What do you think is the cause for change or lack-there-of?
