Distributed AccountingWorking Group Global Grid Forum II July 16th 2001 Washington, DC
Welcome • Introductions • Accomplishments in GFI • Research vs. Working • Distributed Accounting on the Grid (Laura McGinnis) • Resource Accounting, Current Practices (L McGinnis) • QBank (Scott Jackson) • Actions for next forum • Tuesday’s meeting 15:30 – 17:00 (Jr. Ballroom E) • Wednesday’s meeting 11:30 - 12:30 (Jr. Ballroom E)
Introductions • Chairs • Tom Hacker (University of Michigan) hacker@umich.edu • Bill Thigpen (NASA Ames Research Center) bthigpen@arc.nasa.gov • Mailing List – accounts-wg@gridforum.org • Web Site(s) – http://www.gridforum.orghttp://www.nas.nasa.gov/~thigpen/accounts-wg
Research Group vs Working Group • Longer term lifespan • Technologies, or opportunities where a long term approach is appropriate • Technical specifications and recommendations will not come from research groups • Informational, experimental, or community practice documents will. • Spawn or provide input to working group It is expected that research groups
GFI Accomplishments • We covered 5 documents. Overall they were very good. • The Charter and Simplifying Administration and Management Practices in the Polish National Cluster were approved as is to pass on to the steering committee. (Charter and Implementation document) • Account Allocations on the Grid has some minor edits needed and Distributed Accounting on the Grid needs some wordsmithing. Both documents will have word versions placed on the web.
GFI Accomplishments • Resource Accounting – Current Practices was well done but needs more sites. UofM, NCSA, and PSNC will be sending in information • Another document is being started to bridge the gap between current practice and market driven account practices. • Met with Cees de Laat co-chair of the AAA (authentication, authorization, and accounting) group in IRTF and will be coordinating documentation
Document Review • Type of document • Summary of content (high lights) • Comments on documents • Recommendation for disposition • Action items
Distributed Accounting Working Group • 6 documents were in the package, 5 were reviewed (overall, very good) • 2 were recommended to be forwarded to the committee, 2 will be edited, and 1 is receiving more input • The need for another document was decided and assigned.
Day 1 • Which information do we need first? • Is there any low hanging fruit? • What do we need to do to work together? • How do we identify low hanging fruit? • Should we be simplifying the account information? • Is there interest in getting low hanging fruit. <Is there a driving need from somewhere> • How do we exchange data between sites? • In Europe there is the data grid. A week ago they prepared a paper. Hopefully we will get a copy.
Day1 • Stratify the vision document into multiple documents. • Should the structure be changed on vision document • Maybe free market stuff doesn’t belong…we need tangible stuff. • Might consider going from vision to architecture or something else. • How do you frame what the document is about
We are a research group • Accounting Research Group • Unfederated area • Common terms - Mi Young • Frameworks - Tom et.al. • Community Practice - Scott / Norbert / anyone else • Current Practices up to 5 need 10 - 12 everyone on mailing list
More representation and activity • Propose research question • Look at grid initiative sites and see if they care about accounting or what they are doing • Possible tie to application research group • Increase the discussion traffic on our discussion group (mailing list)
Raj has written a paper on economic models • Comments should be received on this paper • If there is not a recommendation then that is step 1 • When recommendation is arrived at, the question is how is that coordinated with the other elements at gridforum to build this • What kinds of protocols and mechanisms needed to implement the various economic models
There are all kinds of people that would be interested in this area if people knew what it is that we are looking at. We need to advertise more. • Everyone does their own form of accounting • We should still consider a name change. • Executive session
