  2. nAgendra hArAya trilOchanAya bhasmAngarAgAya mahEshvarAya | nityAyA shuddhAya digambarAya tasmai nakArAya namah shivAyA || 1 || Salutations to the three-eyed lord who wears the king of snakes as his garland; whose body is smeared in ash; is the great Lord; is eternal and pure; wears the directions as his garment; and embodied as the syllable na. mandAkinIsalila chandanacharchitAya nandIshvara pramatha-nAtha mahEshvarAya | mandAra pushpabahu pushpa supujitAya tasmai makArAya namah shivAya || 2 || I bow to Lord shivA, who is bathed by the waters of mandAkini (gangA); is anointed with sandalwood paste; is Lord of nandi and the gaNAs; is the supreme Lord; is worshipped with flowers such as mandAra and many others, and embodied as the syllable ma.

  3. shivAya gaurI-vadanAbja-vrinda suryAya dakshAdh-varanAshakAya | shrI nIlakanTAya vrisha-dhvajAya tasmai shikArAya namah shivAyA || 3 || Salutations to the all auspicious shiva, who is the sun that causes the lotus face of pArvati to blossom; the destroyer of dakshA’s yagjna and ego. Salutations to the blue-throated one, who’s flag bears the emblem of the bull, embodied as the syllable shi. vasishTa-kumbhOdbhava gautamArya munIndra-dEvArchita shekharAya | chandrArka vaishvAnaralochanAya tasmai vakArAya namah shivAya || 4 || I bow to Lord shivA, adorned by mandAkini (gangA), sandalwood paste, lord of nandI and the gaNAs; worshipped with the most fragrant of flowers (ex: mandAra), and embodied as the syllable ma.

  4. yaksha-svarUpAya jatAdharAya pinAkahastAya sanAtanAya | divyAya dEvAya digambharAya tasmai yakArAya namah shivAya || 5 || Salutations to Lord shiva who bears the form of a yakshA; with matted locks and the powerful pinAka bow. Salutations to that primeval Lord, brilliant and bare- bodied, embodied as the syllable ya. phala shruti: panchAksharamidam puNyam ya(h) paTEcchiva* sannidhau shivalOkamavApnoti shivEna saha modatE One who recites this sacred five-syllabled mantrA in the presence of Lord shiva (near his shrine), will attain his abode and be one with him. *paTEt + shiva becomes ‘paTEcchiva’
