Goal of the Course 1 • Learn-by-doing • Just like “Math” • Technical MIS knowledge cannot be learned by reading • Master essential knowledge of MIS • Required for in-class project / assignment / exams
Course Description 2 • Class format • Hybrid: in-class and online • In-class: hands-on class project • Database System Development • Decision Support System Development • E-Commerce Development • Online: managerial concepts of MIS • Terms, definitions, implications, and so on. • Learn about principles of Geographic Information System
About MIS Lab • DO NOT TRY TO FIX THE COMPUTER!! • You will never be penalized because of technical problems of this classroom. • Make sure the Internet connection of your computer works! • Bring a flash (stick) memory to save your work
MIS Lab Security Policy • IT and Dean’s office established an official security policy. • Students are not allowed to stay in the MIS Lab without a faculty member present. • Students will not be allowed to loan the MIS lab proxy card under no circumstances. • There are no exceptions to this rule. • Contact the Dean’s office if you have questions or suggestions about this policy
Submission 1 • You must submit all the assignment, the project, and the midterm exam through the Blackboard submission link. Otherwise, it will not be accepted.
Submission 2 • If you’d like to avoid any type of possible technical problems, please submit using a PC in the school computer lab • And also try to submit at least two days before the due date.
Submission 3 • When you submit an assignment (or exam), you MUST CLOSE the Microsoft office application (i.e., Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Access) COMPLETELY before you submit ASSIGNMENT (OR EXAM) FILES. • Otherwise, you will receive ZERO POINT because Blackboard cannot process and accept "Completed Whole Assignment (or Exam) Files."
Submission 4 • That is, ONLY title of you file will be processed and accepted without including actual contents of your assignment (or exam). • And if an assignment requires submit several files, you must submit all files together at once. That is, you must "UPLOAD" all the assignment files together at once.
Course Guideline 1 Class Attendance Is required More than two absences will significantly negatively impact your final grade. Notify me first by email prior to the absence. Miss a class because of a documentable illness or other reasonable cause, I will provide help. Otherwise, I do not repeat any lectures, labs…… The attendance will be checked.
Course Guideline 2 The Blackboard email is the ONLY official email Every MIS 300 student is issued a Blackboard email account. It is the student's responsibility to regularly check his or her Blackboard email to stay current with MIS 300 course communications. If you email me using your private email after 10 days of the first class, I will not reply……..
Course Guideline 3 • No interference • Surfing the Internet without permission • Typing (email, paper…) and cell phone texting • Talking to classmates during the lectures - If you have any question, let your instructor know directly. Do not discuss your questions with your neighbors • Bottom line…do not distract others • Up to 30 % of your total score can be deducted depending on the level of interference.
Course Guideline 4 • Bathroom Policy • Need to go to the bathroom? • Stand next to the printer and then wait for my signal. • Best! Wait until the “Break”… • If you violet this policy, minimum 10% (based on total score) will be applied.
Course Guideline 5 • Late Policy • All Students must be on time to the class. • If you late more than 20 minutes without any notification (at least 24hours), then it will be considered as “ABSENCE.” • If you violet this policy, minimum 10% (based on total score) will be applied.
Course Guideline 6 • CSUB policy • “Faculty have a fundamental responsibility to maintain the integrity of the learning environment. When confronted by unreasonable disruption in the classroom, faculty are expected to initiate actions to correct such conditions. Such actions may result in disciplinary action ranging from removal from the classroom to formal disciplinary sanctions, including probation, suspension, or expulsion.”
Course Guideline 7 • Peer Group Evaluationis a part of the grading scheme. • Your evaluation is 100% confidential. • To prevent free riding in the group, the contribution of each member will be assessed. • Each member is expected to submit a peer group evaluation at the end of the quarter. • No one will be allowed to see your evaluation. • Please remember that your final grade can be up or down graded based on the evaluation result.
Course Guideline 8 • Microsoft Office is the ONLY official software for our university (No Microsoft Works allowed). • Any work submitted not using Microsoft Office will not be accepted.
Course Guideline 9 • Late work • will be penalized (25% each day late) • Failure to submit an assignment by the deadline will result in a grade of 0. • A written excuses from the appropriate person such as a medical doctor is the only acceptable form of excuse.
Course Guideline 10 • Office hours • Please DO NOT try to use office hours to make up for a missed class (I do not repeat any lectures). • You must be able to demonstrate you have already put a reasonable effortinto solving and/or analyzing the problems. • Honor code • Classroom conduct • Everyone is equal.
Quiz • Each quiz worth 3 points. • In order to pass the quiz, your score must be 25 out of 40. • That is, if you pass the quiz, you can earn 3 points. • If you fail (less than 25), you earn nothing (zero point).
Quiz(con’t) • Allowed to try the quiz two times. • Must be finished in two hours • Each quiz due date is available from the class website. • The quiz is NOT available after the due date. • Worst two quiz scores will be dropped.

Group Activity: EC project • 1st part of EC project: Proposal • Establish your own E-Commerce • Examples are available on our class web page. • 2nd part of EC project • Website development based on the proposal • You are required to develop your own E-Commerce website based on your proposal • Submit both proposal and website through Blackboard
