Nathaniel Hawthorne • Born July 4, 1804 in Salem, Massachusetts, died in 1864(60) • Lived most of his life in Salem and Concord Massachusetts • Neighbors with Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson • Best known for “The Scarlet Letter” House of Seven Gables” and “The Minister’s Black Veil.”
Edgar Allen Poe • Born in Boston, January 19, 1809, died in 1849 (40) • Best known for his short stories and poetry • Transformed the short story • Created the detective story and psychological thrillers • Has world wide influence on literature
