WHAT IS PLAQUE? • A sticky film made up of harmful bacteria that forms on everyone’s teeth • Causes tooth decay, or cavities, and irritates your gums • Bacteria in plaque make acids that can attack the enamel on your teeth and cause cavities
HOW DO YOU PREVENT PLAQUE FROM ATTACKING YOUR TEETH? BRUSH AND FLOSS!
WHAT OTHER FOODS ARE HEALTHY FOR TEETH? • Milk and milk products--cheese, yogurt, ice cream • Vegetables • Meat • Fish • Fruit
WHY? • They stick to teeth and allow bacteria to grow under them • Sugary foods help bacteria grow and make plaque acids that cause cavities and tooth decay
WHAT TO DO? • Cut down on sticky and sugary snacks and eat tooth-healthy snacks instead • Brush and floss your teeth after you eat to reduce the bacteria that lead to cavities and tooth decay • Visit your dentist regularly to have your teeth cleaned and protected
