  1. Topic :The Immune system.Aim: How does the immune system work to protect the body against diseases? Do Now: Read p. 147 2nd Para. Define these terms: Immunity, pathogenic, antigen , & antibodies.

  2. What is the function of the immune system? Read p. 147 2nd Para. & ans, • What is the function of the immune system? • The immune system protects against antigens associated with: • Pathogenic organisms. • Foreign substances,& • Cancer cells.

  3. How does the immune system work? Examine Fig. 17-3 p. 147&148 • List the lines of defenses of the immune system that help the body to resist disease. • The presence of barriers, ex. The skin, nose hairs,& mucus • Hydrochloric acid in the stomach. • The ability of the white blood cells to engulf bacteria. • The production of antibodies .

  4. What causes an immune reaction (response) ?P. 148 • Invasion of the body by a microbe (ex. Bacteria or virus.) ,causes an antigen antibody reaction. • Other types of immune responses include: • The immune system may attack the body’s own cells or transplanted organs. • During allergic reactions when the body reacts to environmental substances that are usually harmless.
