  2. What is the International Consortium for Social Development (ICSD)? ICSD is an organization of practitioners, scholars and students in the human services • Started in the 1970's by a group of social work educators to respond to pressing human concerns from an international, interdisciplinary perspective • The Consortium fosters collaboration among personnel of organizations such as the United Nations, World Bank, UNESCO, and UNICEF as well as among professional associations in the human services and institutions of higher learning • ICSD is a well-established and widely recognized international catalyst for sharing ideas among many nations and across many cultures ICSD hosts an international conference bi-annually, focusing broadly on global issues pertaining to human rights, development, and social policy while intimately showcasing issues in a particular developing country 2013 Location and Focus: • Kampala, Uganda • New Frontiers in Social Development: Facing Opportunities and Challenges Source: http://www.socialdevelopment.net/

Why Uganda? • Uganda celebrates the 50th anniversary of its independence • Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel: Top Ten countries for 2012 • Growth over the past ten years has occurred across in many sectors such as manufacturing, mining, transport, communications, and construction - nearly doubling the size of the Ugandan economy • Site of conflict rehabilitation in action • City of Kampala: • Kampala is the capital and largest city of Uganda • Kampala has gone through major changes from the time of the first explorers who traveled to Uganda. • Kampala has grown and is now booming with artists, writers, political activists and strong economists

Why Makerere University?“We build for the future” • Makerere University is Uganda’s largest university • Makerere University has 22 faculties, institutes and schools • Offers programs for ~ 30,000 undergraduates and 3,000 postgraduates • Houses the Centre of Excellence in Social Sciences Research in AIDS funded by the National Institute of Health, USA • Over the years the University has hosted several international, national and regional conferences including: women’s organizations, social economic development, national strategic development plans (such as the Poverty Eradication Plan) and human rights initiatives as well as the Annual research and Innovations Dissemination conference • The University’s goals are to produce graduates of international standards within the local environment, with knowledge and relevant skills to provide leadership in enterprise, public service and welfare; encourage and support useful research; create knowledge; and provide further learning opportunities for adults
