  7. New Netherland • In 1609, Henry Hudson explores waterways for Dutch • Dutch claim land in (now) New York • Then NYC was called New Amsterdam • Dutch focus on fur tradenot on settlement • Welcomed settlers from other lands

  10. England Victorious • The English beat the Dutch • In 1664, Duke of York leads army and re-names the capital New York • By 1750, about 1.2 million English settlers in 13 colonies

  13. Native Americans • Natives Fall to Disease • European diseases are more deadly than war • Smallpox cause most fatalities • Colonists use enslaved Africans to work in place of Native Americans
