  3. What’s in the box? • Google is a Search Engine Database • With a partner, answer these two questions: • What do you use Google for? How does Google work?

  4. Just combing the surface • Surface web: Webpages that are with the database of search engines (They come up more often) • Deep web: Undiscovered sites

  5. PageRank • PageRank is part of what makes Google work. It determines which sites come up first in a search.

  6. Why Google Operators? • Using Google Operators will help you conduct more accurate searches • They will help you find the “Small Green Smiley Faces”!!

  7. Let’s Play With Operators • Site: • Filetype: • Intitle: • Intext: • Inurl: • Define: • Link: • -, ~, “ “

  8. Quotes • Putting multiple words in quotes (“ ‘’) searches for them all in sequence • Information Technology – Searches for all sites with both words in any place and order • “Information Technology” – Only searches for pages with the two words together

  9. Tilde (~) • Putting a Tilde (~) in front of a word will search for that word along with all of its synonyms • For example, searching for “~inexpensive” will also search for cheap, low cost, etc.

  10. Site:yourURL.com • Search Uvic.ca for pages related to Information Technology • For example: site:uvic.ca “information technology”

  11. Filetype:XYZ • HyperText Markup Language (html) • Adobe Portable Document Format (pdf) • Microsoft Word (doc) • Microsoft Powerpoint (PPT) • Microsoft Excel (xls) • Search the web for a PPT file about Barack Obama

  12. Intitle:term • Search for PDF files with “Canada” and “History” in their titles that mention Confederation

  13. Related:webpage • Find webpages related to bcferries.com
