Project I-57 Teleapprenticeship
History & Purpose • Project I-57 links five very different Illinois K-12 schools north to south along Interstate 57, giving these students and teachers a chance to conduct authentic research on their own communities, to interact via the Internet with counterparts at other Illinois schools, and to gain experience with the diversity within their own state. Skills to be developed and integrated into their courses include social studies, reading, and math.
History & Purpose (cont.) • Project I-57 students to utilize U of I students as a technological resource to find community information and use us to help them efficiently formulate questions to find information on the web. • Teleapprenticeship or learning while doing in a remote authentic setting.
History & Purpose (cont.) • Strengths of teleapprenticeship: schools get all new technology and both students and teachers learn how to use the technology. • Weaknesses of teleapprenticehip: grade levels are not matched and too many people are involved.
History & Purpose (cont.) • The Illinois State Board of Education got money from the Federal government to fund “Technology Literacy Challenge Grants.” They put out a Request for Proposals (RFP), which allowed statewide proposals. The Benton and Maine Township administrators came up with the idea for Project I-57. They asked Fisher, U of I, and the Chicago Historical Museum to join.
