Buy Local Or Organic: -If it’s local it didn’t have to travel that far. Organic foods are much more likely to have been produced in an eco-friendly manner. -Foodstuffs Like coffee and other large crop farms take a lot of machinery to maintain -Most non-local foods are imported from far-away countries. Necessitating long distance transport results in an increase of the carbon footprint of foreign items. -Buy foods with less excess packaging or ones with recycled or recyclable packaging
Reduce Energy consumption Around your Home • Compact fluorescent bulbs use about 90 percent less energy than incandescent bulbs, (Energy Star reports) • If every household in the United States replaced one incandescent light with a CFL, it would save enough energy to light 300 million homes for an entire year • Ask about special energy-efficient offers when you buy new appliances, There are offers and rebates out there for buying efficient.
Efficient Cars • Most states actually have rebates for driving an electric or hybrid car, or even just having a more efficient than average car • Avoiding excess Idling (like heating before you drive in winter) and keeping good maintenance upon your car (regular oil changes ,tires, etc) can increase your fuel efficiency up to 5% • Drive slower on the highway • Carry less weight. For every excess 50 lbs your car carries it loses .25 mpg
