Brain Warm-Up • Rewrite as a multiplication sentence: • 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 • 4+ 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 • Rewrite as expanded addition: • 3 x 4 • 9 x 5
ExponentsPrime and Composite Ms. Latimer
Base The number being repeatedly multiplied Exponent The amount of times it’s multiplied Vocabulary • 64- Power • 6 is the base • 4 is the exponent • Means: 6 x 6 x 6 x 6 • Power • The base and exponent put together
What is the base? 34 72 93 58 What is the exponent? 75 92 38 64 You try it When trying to Evaluate, do NOT multiply the base and exponent!!! • Now try to write it out…. • 73 = • 82 =
Quick!, Partner Up • Solve: • 34 = • 72 = 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 = 81 7 x 7 = 49 • Write the product as a power: • 8 x 8 x 8 x 8 x 8 • 13 x 13 x 13 = 85 = 133
PRIMEComposite VOCABULARY! Prime– a whole number whose only factors are 1 and itself. Composite– a whole number that has factors other than 1 and itself. P.S. The number 1 is not prime or composite!
Prime Factorization • A number written as the product of prime numbers • Ex: 6 = 2 x 3 • (2 and 3 are both prime numbers) • (6 is the PRODUCT) • Factor Tree – • A diagram that shows the factors that produce the number • Ex: 12 2 x 6 2 x 3
What does this all mean? • We can use the factor trees to find the prime numbers • Which we can thereby use to write down the prime factorization 16 • Example: 4 x 4 2 x 2 2 x 2 Prime Factorization: 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 OR 24
Can you solve it more than one way? Helpful Hint: Circle the prime numbers you come up with! • 36 6 x 6 2 x 3 2 x 3 • 36 9 x 4 3 x 3 2 x 2 Either way you do it the Prime Factorization stays the same : 2 x 2 x 3 x 3 OR 22 x 32
Try These: • 42 68 81 7 x 6 2 x 34 9 x 9 7 2 x 3 2 2 x 17 3 x 3 3 x 3 Prime Factorizations: 7 x 2 x 3 22 x 17 34
