Staying for Lab • Two or more labs or assignments behind, must stay during Lab to get 100% attendance credit tonight - 3 labs in, and 2 assignments in. Who must stay: • EVERYONE! (Unless you have turned more in tonight). Computers and Society, Class 7
News • The CD-ROM (about 700 MB) and DVD-ROM (about 4.7 GB) are accepted computer storage formats for optical disks • The next technology is two-level DVDs that will store about 10 GB • Blue-Ray (Sony) Vs HD-DVD (Toshiba) • Toshiba has just announced it is withdrawing HD-DVD • Expect more products and advertising soon Computers and Society, Class 7
Finishing Chapter 5 • Computer Monitoring software – types: • Detect and monitor another computer on a network • “Monitor” often means screen shots • Keyboard logger – log or record all keystrokes, send the log to someone else (a hacker?) • Presence technology – sometimes can locate computer or device physically (GPS etc.) Computers and Society, Class 7
Computer Monitoring Software • This software must be installed on computer being monitored • Video surveillance – video cameras being installed in many places, for different purposes • Employee monitoring – like computer monitoring, except better access to computer Computers and Society, Class 7
Computer Monitoring Software • Presence technology – cellphones • Protecting yourself • Software can be installed without your knowledge, by clicking on a link, for example in an online greeting card or email • DB: Tracking Cookie – looks at other cookies • Computer security to detect monitoring software – antispy software, modern antivirus software (SpyBot, AdAware) Computers and Society, Class 7
Using Excel 2007 • Starting – be careful to start 2007, not 2003 • Layout – cells in rows and columns • Cell address • Selecting a cell or a range of cells • What can you put in a cell? • Text (usually as a label) • Number (types) • Formula (the real power) Computers and Society, Class 7
Using Excel 2007 • Entering information in a cell • Click on cell to select it • Type • Tap <Enter> (or arrow/click to another cell) • Entry grayed out until you do this • Formatting • Formula • ALWAYS STARTS WITH = !!! • <Enter> to stop Computers and Society, Class 7
Excel Formulae • +, -, *, / combine with ( & ) • Entering a cell address processes the contents of that cell • Enter address by typing or (better) by clicking • What you see in the cell is the results of the formula – see the formula on the formula bar • Seeing formulae in cells • Other formulae operate on range(s) • Sum, Average, Min, Max • Excel formulae are live !!! Computers and Society, Class 7
Excel Charts • Chart of cell contents, usually a data table • Enter data • Select range to plot (include labels) • Click Insert tab, then select chart type NOTE: Left column (labels) should be text, not numbers. To use numbers, start each with ‘ Computers and Society, Class 7
