1. Mrs. Brown’s Classroom Policies Martinez Elementary School

2. Purpose • The purpose of these classroom policies is to instill responsibility in students regarding academic work and personal behavior. Your support is greatly appreciated.

3. Academic Work • Students may have homework for these reasons: • To reinforce a skill area • To reinforce a new concept • To review for a test • To complete a classroom assignment or special project • When the student has failed to use academic time wisely • Planners • Students are provided with a planner that is filled out together in the morning. Please feel free to review this with your child and check over the work as you wish. Also, please sign your child’s planner each night.

4. Academic Work • Due Dates • Daily assignments are normally due the day after they are assigned. Some time to work on assignments will be given during class, thus allowing students the opportunity to clarify assignments and concepts in the presence of the teacher. Students will generally have 45 minutes – 1 hour of homework on school nights. This includes the thirty minutes of reading that each child is required to do each night. For reports, projects, or other long-term assignments, a due date will be given.

5. Academic Work • Standards • All assignments will be completed in a neat manner (easy to read and with the proper heading) or the student may be asked to do the work again. • Absences – Assignments will not be given prior to absences • If a student is absent, it is expected that the work is made up. One day will be allowed to make up the work for each day absent. Special provisions may be made for extended illnesses. The teacher will provide the student with assignments during or after an absence, but the student is ultimately responsible for finding out what work needs to be made up and turned in for credit.

6. Academic Work • Late Assignments • Assignments will be accepted after the due date with the penalty of a 50% reduction in the grade. The purpose is to emphasize the importance of due dates. • Redos • Students may redo an assignment, and receive an 85% the second time around. Redone assignments need to be attached to the original and turned in the next day.

7. Academic Work • Returned Papers • Completed, graded papers will be returned home in the child’s Friday folders. Please take a few minutes to review your child’s papers. Also, please sign the Friday folders and write comments if you wish. Your interest and encouragement are very important to your child’s learning experience.

8. Subjects • Math – Please have your child do xtramath.com 10 minutes per night. This will help them master their multiplication and division facts. • Reading – make sure your child is reading at least 20 minutes per night. They also can do lyrics2learn.com at home for extra practice. • Writing – we will be doing many SCR and extended responses throughout the year. Watch your child grow as a writer! • Science – The units we will be studying are Ecosystems, Space, and Electricity. • Social Studies – We will be studying about Colorado’s history throughout the year. At the end of the year, the students will pro-tray one famous Colorado character in our Colorado Character Museum.

10. Behavior • Every student is entitled to work in a comfortable and safe environment. The Class Dojo Site www.classdojo.comattempts to provide a learning atmosphere by promoting encouragement and appropriate school behavior. Everyday each student generates points for various skills; following directions, being on task, getting their homework done, listening, and etc. These skills are all on report cards. If a child chooses to break a rule then they lose points. If a child breaks a rule or doesn’t turn their homework in more than three times per week, the student will be given a level one form. Please discuss this with your child and sign the form and return it the next day. Parents are also contacted if misbehavior or incomplete work becomes a persistent problem. Please sign into the site to track your child’s performance and behavior each day. Please speak to your child about his/her accomplishments and the things they need to work on.

11. School Procedures • Snacks – need to be nutritional, finger foods. • Water bottles – They must have an enclosed bottle that can’t spill. • Extra classes (G.T., orchestra) • Students in orchestra will be pulled from class during Intervention time. Students in G.T. will be pulled during Intervention time. • Change in dismissal plans should be handled in the morning before school. Phone calls to and from are discouraged, except for emergencies. • Early pick up of students is handled from the office. Be sure to sign your child out. • Book Orders – please write out a check to Scholastics or Troll. No cash please. • Please call 328-6100 for an appointment when you feel we need to discuss any of your concerns. • Dress code – in school newsletter. Please be aware of the suggested dress.

13. Field Trips • The students will be going on three field trips this year. We will be going to Denver to explore the Denver Museum and Capital. This field trip will be approximately $20.00.
