  1. People and Places in the epic poem The Odyssey All of these people and places play a role in Odysseus’ journey; some help him, while others try to destroy him. However, our hero triumphs in the end.

  2. Troy- where the Trojan War took place • After Odysseus fought the Trojan war for 10 long years, he need to get home in order to get home to his wife and son. He came up with the idea of the Trojan Horse to defeat the Trojans.

  3. Phaeacia: This is where Odysseus is telling all about his journey • Alcinous- King of Phaeacia- helps Odysseus get home after his long journey • Odysseus tells Alcinous all about his adventures after leaving Troy- FLASHBACK • This is Odysseus’ last stop. Alcinous gives him a boat and a new crew to get home to Ithaca

  4. The Land of the Lotus • Lotus eaters- people eat a flower and escape reality; they live in a dream world and just exist • On this island, if you eat the lotus plant you want to be just like the Lotus Eaters and escape reality and just sleep and relax

  5. Land of the Cyclops • Cyclops- one eyed giants that live in a society with no laws, rules, or traditions. Savages • Polyphemus- the Cyclops that Odysseus and his men have to try and defeat

  6. Sirens’ Island • Sirens- nymphs who sing a song to lure the men to their death • In the sea, these Sirens will rise from the water and sing a song that will brainwash the men to jump off the ship and drown to death

  7. Scylla & Charybdis • Scylla- 6 headed monster that eats people (one man for each head) • Charybdis- a whirl pool that sucks the ocean in and spits it out as fire

  8. Land of LastrygonesOgygia • Lastrygonians- Cannibals Aeaea Circe’s land- an enchantress who helps Odysseus and tells him things that are upcoming • Calypso- enchantress who falls in love with Odysseus and keeps him on her island for 7 years. She turns his men into Swine (pigs) • Island of Aeolus- God of the winds- who tries to help Odysseus get home but the winds blew him off course instead

  9. Thrinacia • Helios- the Sun God • Cattle are sacred to Helio

  10. Ithaca • Odysseus’ home/ kingdom • 118 men are trying to court- win over- Penelope (Odyssues’ wife) in order to take over as king
