UW on iTunes U –An update UCIST meeting 16 February 2007 Andrea Chappell
Topics • Quick review of “UW on iTunes U” • Status • Authentication and Authorization • Next steps • Questions • Links
Review: What’s iTunes U? • Special instance of iTunes Music Store • Upload/download site for universities provided on Apple servers • “Brandable” to school’s image • In US: Duke, Stanford, Berkeley, … • Ontario: OCAD, Nippissing, UoT, York, Queens, …
UW on iTunes U Intend to investigate uses, no continued support commitment at this time! • Sign agreement with Apple for UW site on the Apple iTunes U service • Give access to interested parties • Get feedback • Report findings (UCIST)
Status • Site has been set up since early fall • Slow to give access to others because of complexity of authorized access • No “out of the box” solutions, framework • Other Ontario schools had not been using logins (freely available files); maybe now? • IST Computer Systems & Services working on authorization solutions
Authentication • Uses central UWdir/ADS • No accounts on iTunes U, rather user passed through as authenticated or unauthenticated, with credentials • Base permissions on the status above, and on other roles (see next slide)
Authorization (1/3) • What you can do is based on your “credentials” and permissions; e.g.: • Instructors in KIN104L should be able to upload files and edit the course info • Students in KIN104L should be able to download files • Also, inheritance … course inherits roles and permission from “above”
Authorization (2/3) • Our first attempt, credentials “fudged” in the iTunes U script • Now working on groups in Active Directory; e.g.: • KIN104L.001.1.LEC-students contains KIN104L roster • iTunes U script “talks” to ADS to determine groups for user
Authorization (3/3) • In iTunes U • Each course has an Identifier; we use the official course name; e.g., KIN104L.001.1.LEC • For course KIN104L.001.1.LEC, set up roles and permissions; e.g., • Edit permissions for Instructors with credential for {Identifier} (which is KIN104L.001.1.LEC)
What next steps? • With authorization almost solved, can give access for trials. • Setting up groups in ADS is a new business! Lots of support questions. • Specific use examples: KIN104L, PLAN261, Hallman lectures. • How to support content creation for trials. Some self-sufficient, others need help.
Still lots of questions • Benefits or limitations compared to other methods? (Pedagogical and technical) • What support is required (including creating ADS groups, creating content [including in the e-classroom], using iTunes U)? • What is “official” and unofficial and who manages? (Who “owns” site?) • Who gets access at what level? • Who gets how much space? • FIPPA considerations for student content.
