Ramsey Hill SchoolEst. 1900 OVERVIEW Moved three times, finally settled in Washington Depot, CT in 1948. Turned Co-ed in 1949. 2012/2013 enrollment of 333 students. 138 boarding students grades 6-9. Over $1 million given in financial aid. Mission: To educate the whole child while emphasizing effort at a criterion for success. Financially stable = No debt, all operations paid for by tuition. $8 million endowment. Serves primarily wealthy families who: 1. Don’t have adequate schools in their area, 2. Have lost control of their child, either socially or academically, 3. Want to prepare their child for secondary boarding school.
Best Fit Technology Tablet Computing • The library and lower school have begun iPad programs. • iPads “now account for 97% of all tablet-based web traffic in the U.S. . . .” (Johnson, Adams, Cummins, 2012). • Many students own there own iPads, making the learning curve on tablets very small.
Why Futuring is Important - Futuring is the process of thinking deeply about the future and its affect on you, your business, school, or organization. - Being on the leading edge is what education is all about. - Sobreroalso writes about the importance of organizations, “shifting from reactive to proactive modes to anticipate change" (2004a).
Scenarios & Scanning • “The great value of a scenario is being able to take complex elements and weave them into a story which is coherent, systematic, comprehensive, and plausible” (Mietzner & Reger, 2005). • Scanning is the act of monitoring all social, political, economic and educational trends and data in order to better inform organizational decisions.
Literature ReviewVision 2017: Ramsey Hill School Jenkins (1983) wrote about the ever-present problem of the need for more technology and the lack of a budget to pay for it. The 2012 Horizon Report by Johnson, Adams, Cummins (2012) reviews the emerging technologies over the next year, two to three years, and four to five years.
Literature ReviewVision 2017: Ramsey Hill School (Continued) Russo (1999) rebuts Manno’s (1999) article in his “American Education’s Changing Policy Context and Private Education: A Response to Bruno v. Manno.” The author reviews the various holes in Manno’s argument. The most compelling deal with accountability and the challenge of working around a teacher’s union. • Manno (1999) writes in his article titled “The Financial, Legal, and Political Context of Education” that the landscape of education is changing more drastically than ever. This obviously affects both private and public education. The author’s premise is that that legislators should base policy creation on the following criteria: “shift power from producers to consumers, focus on results, demand accountability, offer families choices of different schools, and foster professionalism” (p. 33).
Classroom/Organization 2017 • Ramsey Hill School will be a completely cloud based school by 2017. • The school will achieve this goal by using Google Apps for Business. At a cost of roughly “$10/user/month” (Pricing – Google, n.d.). • All teachers will be required to have an online version of their classroom where students can access class materials, chat with fellow students, and view course requirements. • iPads will be built into the tuition at Ramsey and all students will be required to have one. • 50% of classrooms at Ramsey will have a SMART board and all remaining rooms will have a projector.

Call to Action • Change can start today. • Beginning in the winter term, every teacher will be required to have an online classroom for his or her class. • The second step will be the establishment of a technology committee consisting of all department heads, several faculty representatives, and the IT department head. This group will create and push the technology agenda, measure success, and foster responsible change in the use of technology at Ramsey Hill School.
Five Ways to Prepare • Visioning exercise with faculty. • Address organizational goals and priorities. • Have a frank discussion with the Information Technology department about their needs and goals. • The school will decide how each department is going to embrace technology resulting in a detailed plan for how iPads, class web pages and Google Apps will be used by each teacher in each class. • All faculty will have to identify or sign up for an online class to take within the next six months, and then have to take one online class per year for as long as they are employed by Ramsey Hill School.
