Accreditation A positive process for institutions and programs to learn about themselves and grow. Richard Laramy and James DePaepe July 10, 2007
Regional (NEAS&C,MSACHE,SACS, NCA\HLC,WASC,NWCCU) • Standards for accreditation (1) INSTITUTIONAL MISSION, GOVERNANCE, AND EFFECTIVENESS, 2) PROGRAMS, 3) Faculty, 4) RESOURCES, INSTITUTIONAL RESPONSIBILITY FOR COMMISSION POLICIES) • A foundation in institutional mission, goals, and objectives; • Support and collaboration of faculty and administration; • Systematic and thorough use of quantitative and qualitative measures; • Assessment and evaluative approaches that lead to improvement; • Investment of time and funding to achieve success. • An evaluation of the assessment system
NCATE/TEAC Example • NCATE 6/TEAC 4 standards for COE to meet (student/program assessment, faculty, diversity, governance, and field/clinical exp) • Need 2-5 yrs of data • Want to see Unit, Program and sometimes course data • They want institutions to demonstrate a process and validate data driven and data informed decision making.
AACSB, ACBSP, IACBE (Accreditation for the College of Business) • Standards areas ( leadership, strategic planning, student and stakeholder focus, measurement of student L&P, faculty & staff focus, educational & business process, management process) • 2-5 yr data tracking • Want to see Unit, Program and sometimes course data • Assurance vs. evidence of learning • Demonstrate continuous improvement • Benchmarking and comparison data (i.e. Take the Credit)
Challenges for Institutions • Systemic perception (everybody believes someone else is collecting data) • University collects data for Regional accreditation • Units collect data for specialized accreditation • Programs collect data for specialized accreditation and internal reviews • IR collects data on students • Admissions collects data on students • Graduate Schools collect data on students • Alumni office collects data on graduates • Faculty collect data on students
Solution for Success • Stakeholders need to know and see “what’s in it for them” and “buy in” to data collection macro approach • Take inventory: (document review, survey, interview, observation) • Report back findings • Planning – set up committee and sub-committees • Strong Leadership (internal and external) • Must make tough decisions • Come to consensus • Keep it Simple (avoid shotgun approach)
System and Deployment • System needs to meet minimum requirements of the most rigorous unit accreditation with growth ability built in. • Deployment should be systematically calculated based upon accreditation needs (use accreditation as a driver)
