  3. Lean Product Definitions • Several Approaches • Toyota Product Development System (TPDS) • Other Systems (e.g. Six Sigma) • Ecology Metrics for “Lean” • Reduce Waste • Reduce the Use of Toxics as defined by 313 • Improve Profitability of Client Companies

TPDS / LPDS • Key Parameter is Customer Value • Thirteen LPDS Core Principles • “Chief Engineer” Defines, Owns Product • Deep Engineering Expertise in Each Field • “Simultaneous Engineer” coordinates multiple subsystems and/or processes • Product Development is Itself a Process • Waste is to be Eliminated in every Process

  5. Other Management Systems • Total Quality Management (TQM) • Six Sigma (Statistical Management) • Total Productivity Maintenance (TPM) • Quality Circles • Each has Strengths and Weaknesses • LPDS Project Will Apply as Appropriate
