Drawings of the first prototype • We started from the design of the prototype structure and • the mechanics of its test box • The prototype test box contains: • a quartz radiator • a wire cathode frame • the THGEMs and spacer frames • a segmented collection anode pcb • We hope to perform the test of the first prototype using muons of the COMPASS beam or halo and a quartz radiator to generate Cherenkov photons. THGEM production for the prototype following the preliminary indications coming from the laboratory tests, the geometrical parameters of our first THGEM prototype have been defined: Thickness: 0.20 mm Holes diameter: 0.20 mm Pitch: 0.50 mm Material: fiberglass + 17 μm thick Cu Active area: 10 cm х 10 cm Fulvio TESSAROTTO

Initial test configuration • Read-out for the initial tests: as for the MAPMTs • Replacing the cover with the quartz radiator with a mylar/aclar foil: test the device as ionizing particle detector Fulvio TESSAROTTO
PLANNING • Lab tests, no CsI • Beam tests, no CsI • Trigger prepared in 888, at the end of the hall, to trigger on halo (or beam) mu’s • If possible, apply CsI on the external surface of the first THGEM Test with quartz radiator ! Fulvio TESSAROTTO
