Explain how perfume or food coloring can be used to describe diffusion?
Diffusion: is the movement of molecules in a fluid or gas from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration. • The perfume is in high concentration in the bottle. When it is sprayed into the air, the perfume molecules will spread out into the air where there is a lower concentration of perfume.
3.5 Active Transport 2.1 Atoms, Ions, and Molecules • Set up Cornell Notes on pg. 37 • Topic: 3.5 Active Transport • Essential Question: • Explain how exocytosis and endocytosis differ from diffusion • Don’t forget to add it to your T.O.Contents! Explain how exocytosis and endocytosis differ from diffusion Key Concept: Cells use energy to transport materials that cannot diffuse across a membrane
3.5 Active Transport, Endocytosis, and Exocytosis KEY CONCEPT Cells use energy to transport materials that cannot diffuse across a membrane.
3.5 Active Transport, Endocytosis, and Exocytosis • Active transportrequires energy input from a cell and enables a cell to move a substance against its concentration gradient. • Drives molecules from a region of lower concentration to a region of higher concentration Low Draw on the top half of pg. 36 High Low High
3.5 Active Transport, Endocytosis, and Exocytosis • Energy=(ATP). • Uses transport protein pumps. • Cells use active transport to maintain homeostasis (balance).
3.5 Active Transport, Endocytosis, and Exocytosis • Phagocytosis is a type of endocytosis in which the cell membrane engulfs large particles. • Endocytosis is the process of taking material into the cell. Draw on the middle of pg. 36
3.5 Active Transport, Endocytosis, and Exocytosis • Exocytosis is the process of expelling material from the cell. • Opposite of endocytosis Draw on the bottom of pg. 36
3.5 Active Transport, Endocytosis, and Exocytosis • Homework: • On the top of pg. 36: • Please create a double-bubble comparing and contrasting exocytosis and endocytosis
