What are public works? • Construction projects built by a government for public use. • What are some examples of these using the Byzantine Empire? • Bridges & roads • Aqueducts • Public baths • Hagia Sophia
Who is the Patriarch? • He is the bishop of Constantinople in the Eastern Orthodox Church. • He called himself “First among equals”, the emperor relied upon him to enact church doctrine.
Who wanted to use the icons? • The pope in the west wanted to use these pictures or representations of sacred Christian persons. • The emperor in the east did not want them used!
What is a hierarchy? • A group of people classified by rank and authority. • Can you give the hierarchy of the Byzantine Empire church? • Emperor • Patriarch; other bishops • Priests
Who was responsible for the schism? • Well, it depends upon who you would ask! • Remember, a schism is a separation or divisions into factions, especially a formal separation within a Christian church. • The pope would say the emperor and his patriarch caused the schism because they did not follow church doctrine nor did they respect his authority over church decisions. • What do you think the emperor would say?
What are mosaics? • Colored fragments of glass or quartz embedded in plaster to form images or designs • The Byzantine Empire will become famous for this form of art in the medieval world!
Why is Constantinople a center of commerce? • Remember commerce is buying and selling on a large scale! • It is a TRADE HUB – other trade centers are coming into “The City” to trade their goods in one central location!
Why was the Justinian Code revolutionary? • This codified law were laws taken from ancient Roman law & developed into 4,652 laws • It extended rights for women, children & slaves • Created a “blueprint” for other countries to create their own codified written laws
Literacy was important in the empire… • Literacy – knowing how to read and write was important to the emperor because he felt if his people could read and write, they would build a better empire!
