2. An Adventure to the New World In this WebQuest, students will be researching independently the expedition of a well known explorer and create a speech and small poster to report their findings. Introduction (Hicks, 1998) You are a servant of the King and Queen. They have authorized you to go on a voyage to the New World to beat out the other countries. Everyone is looking for land, trade and wealth and it is your job to find it first. Whoever wins will be the strongest kingdom in Europe. It is vital that you succeed before anyone else.

3. (Image: No Title) Your mission is going to be to claim as much as you can for the king and queen. You will want to claim any land you find, locate a new trading route, look for the Northwest Passage to get to Asia, and bring back anything that looks valuable. The king and queen will provide you with a ship, crew, and anything else that will be needed for an extensive journey to the New World. In order to fulfill your contract, you will report back to the Queen about your journey. Good luck on your journey and Godspeed!

4. Overall Project You will be assigned the name of an explorer from your teacher. You will use the different websites (as well as any other books from the library) to find specific information about your explorer. After researching, you will create a PowerPoint presentation. You will present you PowerPoint to the Queen and her court (teacher and class) in an oral presentation. During the presentation, you will discuss you explorations as well as the results in history. Your PowerPoint will be in 1st person (you are talking as if you are the explorer) and be in past tense (this already happened). 11. Congratulations! You have successfully returned home from your voyage! Along the way, you have learned about some of the reasons why people would want to explore the New World. how long the voyage took, what section of the New World explorers were travelling to and what your explorer gained from going on this voyage. You have also learned about the route that your explorer took and maybe even learned a fun fact or two along the way. (Voyage)

13. By Kari Kutting; Ideas adapted from Rachel Mednick. Students will research the journey of an explorer from Europe to North America and create a speech and visual aid. This WebQuest allows students to use critical thinking and research skills to find out more about one of the following influential European explorers. Throughout this WebQuest, students will discover the reasons why their explorer went to the New World, which country he sailed for, the route he took, the events of the voyage, and the results of the voyage. The students will present their findings in a 1st person PowerPoint (as if the student were the explorer reporting back to the King/ Queen). You may want to also include your Language Arts teacher to help with research or the Technology teacher with the creation of the PowerPoint presentation.

14. This WebQuest was created for 5th grade students, ages 9 to 10. It aligns with the Ohio Academic Content Standards in the areas of Social Studies, Technology, and Language Arts.

16. *** This WebQuest can also be done by having students create a PowerPoint. If you require this, a mini-lesson may need to be done. • You may need to do a mini-lesson on proper ways to research and how to make sure the information is valid. Also, you may need to address how to properly research as well as what different resources are out there. • Here are additional suggestions for making this WebQuest apply to multiple learners: • Allow time for researching and working together (if you allow groups) in class. If you are short on time, have the students create their assignments at home but make sure students are aware of your expectations. • Assign explorers that are more well-known to students who may struggle with the researching aspect. There are more resources in a wide variety of reading levels for certain explorers. • Make sure that you have an above grade level, at grade level, and below grade level student working on each explorer. This way, students will be able to work together when researching and you will see a wide range of speeches for each explorer. • It might be helpful to assign all Special Needs students to the same explorer so that you may work with them on both their research and their speech in a small group setting at the same time;. • Encourage students to bring props and/ or costumes to add more to their presentations.
