Assuaged • To pacify or soothe Example: The mother assuaged the baby with a bottle.
Predilection • A tendency to think favorably of something in particular. Example: Smiley has a predilection for raw hide bones.
Taciturn • Stern or silent Example: My grandfather can sometimes seem taciturn, but in reality he is a great guy.
Ambled • To go at a slow, easy pace. Example: The couple ambled along talking and holding hands.
Phantom • An appearance or illusion without material substance. • Example: The woman thought she saw her dead dog running, but it was only a phantom.
Intimidation • To force someone to do something through use of fear. • Example: The criminal tried to intimidate the elderly lady, but she hit him with her purse.
Transaction • The published records of the proceedings, as papers read, addresses delivered, such as in a courtroom. Example: The transaction showed that the man had lied in court.
Malevolent • Wishing evil or harm Example: The student was malevolent to her teacher.
Indigenous • originating in and characteristic of a particular region or country; native (often fol. by to): Example: The aborigines are indigenous to Australia.
flivver • something of unsatisfactory quality or inferior grade Example: The flivver was stranded on the side of the road.
Illicitly • Not permitted. Example: The Governor has been accused of illicit activity.
Tranquil • Free from commotion or tumult. The island was a tranquil oasis.
Inequities • lack of equity; unfairness; favoritism or bias. Example: The trial was filled with inequities.
Fractious • Readily angered or unruly. Example: The student was kicked out of the game for fractious behavior.
Disapprobation • Disapproval The principal showed disapprobation for the student’s skimpy shirt.
Mortification • Humiliation or shame The girl experienced mortification when her friends played a mean prank on her.
vexations • The act of annoying or irritating. His behavior vexed his girlfriend.
Literate • Able to read and write. The point of English class is to become literate members of society.
Auspicious • Promising success, fortunate. People say that Obama has an auspicious future ahead of him.
Unanimous • Complete agreement The vote to impeach the president was unanimous.
Ritual • prescribed or established rite, ceremony, proceeding, or service
Anxiety • distress or uneasiness of mind caused by fear of danger or misfortune. Example: The man shows anxiety of losing his job.
Pestilence • A usually fatal epidemic disease, evil. • Example: The pestilence caused many deaths and even more illnesses.
Inquisitive • given to inquiry, research, or asking questions; eager for knowledge; intellectually curious. The child is inquisitive and always ask a million questions.
Edification • Moral improvement or guidance. Example: The priest offered the man edification for his bad behavior.
Assignment • Vocabulary War Sentence. Come up with at least one sentence using 5 of the vocabulary words.
